As the Hello humankindness event coordinator for the Central California Region and a long time hospital volunteer, Monica Hupp has witnessed the impact that Humanity and Kindness have in Healing. As an infant “cuddler” volunteer, Monica has directly experienced the healing that can take place when comfort and kindness is given, not only to patients and their families but also for the provider as well.
In 2009, Monica’s daughter was born prematurely and spent 6 weeks in Bakersfield Memorial’s NICU, this experience motivated Monica to become a Patient & Family Advisory Council member and co-chair which then lead to invitations to participate in other hospital committees focused on improving patient care and excellence.
In the spring of 2014, Monica was invited to attend Dignity Health’s corporate “Guiding Principles” conference and participated in the development of the principles that formed the foundation of the Hello humankindness staff retreats. Monica’s experience at that conference inspired her to pursue a deeper commitment to Dignity Health’s Hello humankindness promise by becoming the central California staff retreat coordinator and sharing her passion for every element of kindness in the health care environment. Monica started coordinating Dignity Health’s Hello humankindness staff retreats in November 2014 which involved organizing over 115 Hello humankindness retreats and events for nearly 7,000 Central California attendees. Monica’s coworkers lovingly refer to her as the “Humankindness guru” due to her many hours dedicated to the staff retreats and surrounding humankindness events.

Catherine Skow was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. She moved to Hermosa Beach, California in 1973. Catherine had a successful career in advertising and marketing working her way through the ranks to executive positions at Disney, ABC Television and CBS Radio. She is the mother of now grown twins (Zach and Geoff Skow) and currently resides in Bakersfield, California.
After her sons left for college, Catherine made the move back “home” to St. Louis to assist in taking care of her mother whose health was failing. While in St. Louis, she landed an executive position in the Cable business once again in Advertising Sales.
Fast forward about 10 years. In 2009, her son Zach Skow was dying of end stage cirrhosis of the liver at the age of 28. She also ended A 12 year relationship at the same time and Catherine’s heavy drinking turned into out of control drinking. Lost jobs, wrecked cars, and incomprehensible demoralization ensued. By the grace of God, Zach got help – and recovered from his alcohol and drug addiction and started Marley’s Mutts, a very successful non-profit with the slogan “rescue dogs, rescuing people”. Unfortunately, Catherine’s alcoholism just got worse.
She walked away from everything in St. Louis and came back to California. Tried as she might sobriety would elude her. She finally hit bottom and hit hard. The Mission at Kern County seemed like the last resort. In fact, it saved her life. Although the one year Christian Discipleship recovery program was humbling and difficult, almost 4 years after graduating the program Catherine has returned to the Mission as their Director of Resale Operations and oversees Encore Boutique – Upscale/Resale contributing to the Ministries of The Mission Homeless Intervention Services and Recovery Programs.
Her faith has been restored; her relationship with her sons has never been better and at 64 years of age, she celebrated four years sobriety last January.
She was named Shannon Grove’s “Woman of the Year” in 2015 and is very active in helping those seeking sobriety for themselves and others.
